World Map of Medieval Era

Andreas Cellarius

Andreas Cellarius is the producer of the Atlas Coelestis seu Harmonia Macrocosmica, which is the most detailed and beautiful celestial atlas of the 17th century. This makes him one of the greatest medieval map makers. His great work included visual explanations of the theories of Brahe, Ptolemy and Copernicus as well as native lunar diagrams and star charts.

Cellarius was born in the year of 1596 in Germany and from 1625 spent his life in Holland till he passed away in 1665. As this period was the Golden Age of Dutch map-making; along with the scientific and geographic discoveries of the era, the style of representing and distributing these new ideas in graphics was made accurate.

Andreas Cellarius was a Dutch-German cartographer, who was born in Neuhausen near Worms in Germany, and completed his education in Heidelberg. He got married to Catharina Eltmans in Amsterdam in the year of 1625. His career started as a schoolmaster in a Latin school.

Works of Andreas Cellarius included Frontispiece of the Architectura, Frontispiece of the Regni Poloniae, Militaris and Title page of the Regni Poloniae. He had also worked on fortification, Poland, the mathematical science of designing impregnable city walls and defense systems. The Amsterdam publishers Gerard Valk and Petrus Schenk the Younger reprinted the plates of Cellarius' best work, Harmonia Macrocosmica in 1708.
