Fernão Vaz Dourado served as the official cartographer for the Portuguese. He was a well acclaimed map maker and is often referred to as one of the foremost cartographers.
Fernao Vaz Dourado was born around 1520 and worked from India, which, according to some historians, was his birth place. He created several maps of the Indies. Between 1568 and 1571, Fernao Vaz Dourado published a Sea Atlas. He is also known to have created a world map. The Atlas of the Indies was published in the year 1568 by Fernao Vaz Dourado.
Only six of Fernao Vaz Dourado's manuscript atlases have survived the ravages of time. The manuscripts are dated between 1568 and 1580.
