Fra Mauro

Fra Mauro is one of the most renowned medieval map makers of the world. He had contributed a lot in the field of cartography. Fra Mauro is a cartographer of the 15th century. He was actually a Venetian Camaldolese monk. Fra Mauro's workshop of cartography was housed in the monastery of San Michel at a place called Isola Murano, which is situated in the Venetian Lagoon.

In the year 1457, Fra Mauro created a map of the Old World. He complimented his map with many valuable comments. These comments help to understand the geographical ideas of the olden times. This map is today well known as the "Fra Mauro map". Piero Falchetta edited a version of this map in the year 2006.

Fra Mauro devised this map under the supervision of Portuguese King Afonso V. Fra was assisted in this project by Andrea Bianco, who was a contemporary cartographer and sailor. This map was completed in the year 1459 and was sent by Fra Mauro to Portugal. Fra then started working on a copy of this map meant for the Seignory of Venice, but he died before completing his task. It was later on completed by Andrea Bianco.

He had contributed a lot in the field of cartography.
