Bradford Washburn

Bradford Washburn is one of the significant cartographers of the world. He was born on June 7, 1910 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He got his undergraduate degree and masters degree in geography and geology from the Harvard University.

Henry Bradford Washburn produced some of the beautiful maps of different mountain ranges of the world. Some of his finest maps include the map of Mount McKinley, the map of the Presidential range, New Hampshire and the map of the Mount Everest.

His Mt. McKinley map is a result of hard work in places like Boston, Switzerland and Alaska for fifteen long years. Washburn's map of the heart of Grand Canyon was completed in 1975. His map of Muldrow Glacier in Alaska was produced in 1977.

In 1981, Washburn published a map on Bright Angel Trail, Grand Canyon. From 1978 to 1988 he concentrated on the map of Presidential Range of New Hampshire.

During the 70s and 80s, Washburn carried out the extensive work on the geology and elevation of Mount Everest. Besides cartography, he had interest in aerial photography and mountaineering. He had even directed many exploratory expeditions to Alaska.

Dr. Bradford Washburn served as the director of Boston Museum of science between 1939 to 1980 and he became the Honorary Director in 1985 remained so till his death.

Washburn, throughout his career, received many awards. Some of these awards are the National Geographic Society's centennial Award, Medal of Merit of King Albert and other honorary doctorates.

Bradford Washburn's excellent work in the field of map making made him one of the legendary map makers of the world.
