Eduard Imhof was a professor at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, where he used to teach cartography. He is famous for the relief shading work on atlases and maps. He is known to have worked on various school maps between 1922 and 1973. During this time, he worked on the maps of Switzerland. He is also known to have drawn cantons and Vorarlberg, an Australian province.
Eduard Imhof was born in Switzerland in a town named Schiers. He learned surveying in 1914 at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and continued his studies at the institute till 1919. After completing his diploma, he worked as a faculty member at the Institute of Geodesy. He is known to have married Agnes Untersander in 1922 and had four children.
In 1927, he took to revising Schweizerischer Mittelschuatlas, which was used in the high schools of Switzerland. It is noteworthy that all the editions of Schweizerischer Mittelschuatlas published between 1932 and 1976 were published under his supervision. While measuring the height of Minya Konka in 1930, he stayed at a Tibetan Monastery. Eduard Imhof was accompanied by Arnold Heim and Paul Nabholz in this expedition.
Eduard Imhof was awarded the Doctorate of Philosophy in 1949 by University of Zurich. In 1951, he traveled to Ankara in order to survey Turkey. Eduard married Viola May in 1954 and in the same year made an ascent to Mount Ararat. He retired from academics in 1965. However, it is noteworthy that he continued to deliver lectures and receive many awards until his death in 1986.
