Utah Geological Survey

Utah Geological Survey functions under the Utah Department of Natural Resources. The department works to provide scientific information on the geological environment, natural and man made hazards and resources of the state of Utah.

Utah Geological Survey has emerged as one of the leading producers of on-line maps using the latest GIS technology. Some of the available on-line maps by Utah Geological Survey are listed below:

Geological Hazard Maps: These maps depict the areas that are liable to be affected by adverse natural and geological conditions such as landslides, earthquakes, poor soil conditions, debris flows, rock falls and flood.

Ground Water Maps: This section comprises of maps on the discharge-area, ground-water-quality classification and ground-water recharge-areas.

Geological Maps: The maps in this section exhibit the composition and age of the rock and sediments that form the substance of the earth's surface.

Geological Research Maps: These maps benefit mining as they outline the areas where the minerals are located. The mine maps are accompanied by added information about the mines.

GIS Maps: The latest technology is used to enable the user to create specialized maps with the use of available data.

Topographical Maps: These maps represent the earth's surface on a 3 dimensional platform. Contour lines indicate the areas with similar elevation level. These maps aid in providing information on direction, scales and location of various regions. They also comprise of information on political boundaries, geographical coordinates, roads, canals, streams and rails of the specified area.
